Made to order
This hat was long in the making. It started growing in a forest years ago. We can only imagine the wildlife it has seen, the cold winters it has braced and the squirrels that may have mingled on it. Finally, it was made into a workable yarn and I hand crocheted it into a hat most becoming, no matter whether you are on a meadow or by the sea. It is trimmed with black rayon petersham ribbon, a trimming so classic it effortlessly goes with many vintage inspired outfits. By wearing this hat you're wearing a part of the Nordic forest.
The brim and the crown are reinforced with steel wire, bringing a slight moldability. The crown is not too deep, meaning it fits most head sizes. Two hair combs are sewn on the inside of the hat.
While I wouldn't recommend wetting the hat regularly, Ottilja can stand the occasional sprinkle of rain beautifully. The crocheting process actually requires moistening the material while working, and I have tested this aspect by completely submerging a finished hat in a water bowl for over five minutes. There was no damage, and the hat wears well even while still drying out.
I'm mentioning this at length because paper is most often associated with novelty hats that are frail and sensitive to moisture. The type of fibrous paper yarn used in Ottilja is a surprisingly robust material suitable for normal wearing.
